The poet William Stafford set himself the task of writing a poem a day. When someone asked him what he would do when his poem-of-the-day wasn't very good, he replied "I simply lower my standards." In order to increase output, the bar here is set at a low level - the point of this is to have some fun with current events and politics. I welcome contributions and comments. Now you can also follow Doggerelo on Twitter (@doggerelo). Because of continuing medical problems, I'm no longer able to post a poem-a-day. I'll continue to post poems, but at a reduced frequency, so please stay tuned.

"Nice" Gays: An Insidious Plot

Louis Sheldon, of the Traditional Values Coalition, complains that TV shows invariably portray gays as “nice” and sees in this a conspiracy “to desensitize Americans to the genuine risks of the homosexual agenda”.

…homosexuals are invariably portrayed as funny, sensitive and caring individuals. At the same time, critics of homosexuality are portrayed as bigoted and ignorant homophobes who have to learn to accept homosexuality as a valid lifestyle choice. Yet behind the scenes, how many people realize that organizations such as the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation actually have veto power over many of these scripts and can actually force directors and producers to rewrite dialogue that casts an unflattering light on homosexuals?

There’s no one nicer than gays
That’s what the TV conveys
It’s easy to see
That LGTB
Controls what the network portrays.

If everyone thinks gays are nice
No one will think it’s a vice:
Being queer is just great
It’s no fun being straight
Add gays to your life for some spice.

But gays for a long time have planned
Gay marriage to make law of the land
There’s only one way
To stop this today
From TV they ought to be banned.
