The poet William Stafford set himself the task of writing a poem a day. When someone asked him what he would do when his poem-of-the-day wasn't very good, he replied "I simply lower my standards." In order to increase output, the bar here is set at a low level - the point of this is to have some fun with current events and politics. I welcome contributions and comments. Now you can also follow Doggerelo on Twitter (@doggerelo). Because of continuing medical problems, I'm no longer able to post a poem-a-day. I'll continue to post poems, but at a reduced frequency, so please stay tuned.

Iowa Caucus Sonnet

Michelle’s been having trouble lately
Her campaign chairman’s jumped the ship.
Rick Perry’s polls have fallen greatly -
His chances have begun to slip.
Now Romney’s in the lead position,
Although he looks like a mortician.
Ron Paul is closing, closing fast -
He’s gaining now, but can it last?
And Rick Santorum’s also surging,
To faith and family he’s been wed.
Newt Gingrich fills them all with dread,
“Don’t vote for Newt!” the party’s urging.
It's been a most amusing fight,
We’ll all be watching Tuesday night.

While taking my owner for a walk the other day, he was wondering why both Democrats and Republicans insist on Iowa and New Hampshire being the first two states to have votes for selecting the their respective presidential nominees. These conservative states, which only represent 1.4% of the total population, (not to mention each state having a white population over 90%), have such a disproportional influence on establishing front runners, who will remain in the race, who will receive increased funding, etc. Wouldn't it be better to go to a super regional primary every four years (i.e. Northeast early January, Southeast late January, Northwest mid March, South West late March), with a rotation every four years?

I told him to put it on Doggerelo so that me and the misses could watch the evening news in peace and quiet.
