The poet William Stafford set himself the task of writing a poem a day. When someone asked him what he would do when his poem-of-the-day wasn't very good, he replied "I simply lower my standards." In order to increase output, the bar here is set at a low level - the point of this is to have some fun with current events and politics. I welcome contributions and comments. Now you can also follow Doggerelo on Twitter (@doggerelo). Because of continuing medical problems, I'm no longer able to post a poem-a-day. I'll continue to post poems, but at a reduced frequency, so please stay tuned.

O Cardinals!

to be sung to O Tannenbaum/O Christmas Tree
O Cardinals, O Cardinals
You certainly surprised us.
We never really thought you'd win
Your chances seemed so very thin.
O Cardinals, O Cardinals
You certainly surprised us.

O Cardinals, O Cardinals
You gave us so much pleasure.
Through wins and losses, errors too
Your fans stayed loyal, through and through.
O Cardinals, O Cardinals
You gave us so much pleasure.

O Cardinals, O Cardinals
Your vict-o-ry delights us.
You overcame all odds to win,
You really set our towels a-spin.
O Cardinals, O Cardimals
Your vict-o-ry delights us.

So I was out walking my owner the other day, and he had an interesting observation, which happens about as often as the Cubs win the World Series.

When he was a lad, baseball was America's sport. Since then, the NFL had gained supremacy. He noted that the NFL's premier event, the Super Bowl, starts at 6:30 and ends around 10:00. All of America gets to see it and talk about it the next day at work or at school. The World Series, however, starts at 8:15. This meant that one of the most exciting games in baseball history, this year's game six, ended at 12:45 AM, when he and I (as well as most of the east coast) were safely tucked into bed.

His suggestion was to move some of the World Series to day games in order that the today's youth can be as captivated by the heroics of Hamilton and Pujos as he once was by Mantle and Berra.

I suggested that he give me more treats.
