The poet William Stafford set himself the task of writing a poem a day. When someone asked him what he would do when his poem-of-the-day wasn't very good, he replied "I simply lower my standards." In order to increase output, the bar here is set at a low level - the point of this is to have some fun with current events and politics. I welcome contributions and comments. Now you can also follow Doggerelo on Twitter (@doggerelo). Because of continuing medical problems, I'm no longer able to post a poem-a-day. I'll continue to post poems, but at a reduced frequency, so please stay tuned.

Yesterday's Election Results

The elections that Mitt has just won
Mean the end for Santorum’s begun.
He’s got one more chance
In PA to enhance
His run or he’ll soon be undone.

Rick’s still got some hopes for next May
Southern votes could Mitt’s progress delay.
But it seems so remote he
Looks like Quixote
Attacking those windmills all day.

So what is Rick going to do now?
To stay in he has taken a vow.
If he loses PA
He will be flushed away -
And to Rick we will all say ciao.

Etch-A-Sketch in Action

After characterizing Newt Gingrich and Rick Perry in the primaries as soft on immigration, and saying that his policy would be to promote “self-deportation” of illegal immigrants, Mitt Romney now says that as President he will ”… make sure we finally reform our immigration laws step by step, secure the border, improve our legal immigration system, so we can keep people here and welcome people here who will make America a stronger nation.”

On immigration, Mitt’s real tough
He says we’ve not been strong enough.
He castigated Newt and Perry
For plans to offer sanctuary.
According to the last report
He said those folks should self-deport.
But now he’s changed his tune it seems
He wants reform and now he deems
That these folks should not disappear –
Now he wants to keep them here.

On Wisconsin

Wisconsin’s a big one for Mitt -
If he wins it, folks say that’s it!
He’ll have built such a lead
Rick will have to concede
And to Mitt he’ll have to commit.

If he loses, Rick’s still in the game
‘Cause the VP Romney must name
If he chooses Rick
It would be quite a trick
Since hard feelings they’d have to disclaim.

Sarah Palin to Co-Host Today Show.

Sarah Palin has been named as the new co-host of the Today Show.

Today’s new host is Sarah Palin -
It won’t be very easy sailin’
Because she’s sometimes so absurd.
You’d think the network hadn’t heard
About her tendency for failin’
To get the facts that are prevailin’.

Newt Admits Mitt is It

Newt Gingrich admitted on a radio broadcast yesterday that Mitt Romney is “clearly the front runner” and will probably get the delegate votes needed to clinch the nomination.

Newt has said it will probably be
Mitt who becomes the nominee.
This is a major admission
From one who’s known for ambition.
So now what is Newt going to do?
Does he finally tell us adieu
And depart the political scene?
It’s more likely that he will be seen
On Fox, with the right-wing kooks,
And writing more of his books.

Mitt Acrostic

Mitt   Is  Terribly Troubled
In that Tea-Party Types
Tell him that  he's Irresolute,
Too Tentative  In Mindset.

Smearing Climate Scientists

Michael Mann, a Nobel Prize winning climate scientist, describes the efforts of the fossil fuel industries to demonize climate scientists with scientific disinformation and personal attacks.

A scientist who won the Nobel Prize
Now finds himself the target of attacks
That spread false tales and dirty lies

By people who deny accepted facts
That global warming is occurring now,
Because of CO2 from human acts.

It’s clear some industries will not allow
The scientific truth to come to light -
They’ll punish those who dare to tell us how

We must stop burning coal and make things right
By trapping CO2 that we release
To try to mitigate our dangerous plight.

The peaceful nature of our world will cease
Once the levels of our seas increase.
